A Narrative Review on Environmental Impacts of Cannabis Cultivation

    Get PDF
Interest in growing cannabis for medical and recreational purposes is increasing worldwide. This study reviews the environmental impacts of cannabis cultivation. Results show that both indoor and outdoor cannabis growing is water-intensive. The high water demand leads to water pollution and diversion, which could negatively affect the ecosystem. Studies found out that cannabis plants emit a significant amount of biogenic volatile organic compounds, which could cause indoor air quality issues. Indoor cannabis cultivation is energy-consuming, mainly due to heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and lighting. Energy consumption leads to greenhouse gas emissions. Cannabis cultivation could directly contribute to soil erosion. Meanwhile, cannabis plants have the ability to absorb and store heavy metals. It is envisioned that technologies such as precision irrigation could reduce water use, and application of tools such as life cycle analysis would advance understanding of the environmental impacts of cannabis cultivation

In situ synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks/carbon nanotube composites with enhanced CO2 adsorption

A series of ZIF-8 and hydroxyl-functionalized carbon nanotube (CNT) composites were successfully synthesized by the solvothermal method. The obtained ZIF-8/CNT composites were characterized by XRD, SEM, TGA and N2 adsorption at 77 K. The contents of ZIF-8 and CNTs in the composites were calculated from thermal analysis data. CO2 and N2 adsorption at 273 K on the composites was also investigated and compared. The ZIF-8 particles in the composites exhibit similar crystal structures and morphology to those of pure ZIF-8, but display enhanced thermal stability. The surface areas and pore volumes of the ZIF-8/CNT composites are higher than the values calculated for hypothetical physical mixtures, and the synergetic effect between ZIF-8 and CNTs can be proposed. This phenomenon demonstrates that the incorporation of CNTs into ZIF-8 can facilitate the nucleation and crystallization of ZIF-8. As a result, the composites with an optimal CNT content (3.63 wt%) show improved CO2 adsorption capacity and higher relative selectivity for CO2/N2 compared with pure ZIF-8

Building Emotional Support Chatbots in the Era of LLMs

The integration of emotional support into various conversational scenarios presents profound societal benefits, such as social interactions, mental health counseling, and customer service. However, there are unsolved challenges that hinder real-world applications in this field, including limited data availability and the absence of well-accepted model training paradigms. This work endeavors to navigate these challenges by harnessing the capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs). We introduce an innovative methodology that synthesizes human insights with the computational prowess of LLMs to curate an extensive emotional support dialogue dataset. Our approach is initiated with a meticulously designed set of dialogues spanning diverse scenarios as generative seeds. By utilizing the in-context learning potential of ChatGPT, we recursively generate an ExTensible Emotional Support dialogue dataset, named ExTES. Following this, we deploy advanced tuning techniques on the LLaMA model, examining the impact of diverse training strategies, ultimately yielding an LLM meticulously optimized for emotional support interactions. An exhaustive assessment of the resultant model showcases its proficiency in offering emotional support, marking a pivotal step in the realm of emotional support bots and paving the way for subsequent research and implementations

Coronary CT angiography: How should physicians use it wisely and when do physicians request it appropriately?

    Get PDF
Coronary CT angiography has been increasingly used in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease due to rapid technological developments, which are reflected in the improved spatial and temporal resolution of the images. High diagnostic accuracy has been achieved with 64- and more slice CT scanners and in selected patients, coronary CT angiography is regarded as a reliable alternative to invasive coronary angiography. Although the tremendous contributions of coronary CT angiography to cardiac imaging are acknowledged, appropriate use of cardiac CT as the first line technique by physicians has not been well established. Optimal selection of cardiac CT is essential to ensure acquisition of valuable diagnostic information and avoid unnecessary invasive procedures. This is of paramount importance since cardiac CT not only involves patient risk assessment, prediction of major cardiac events, but also impacts physician decision-making on patient management. Applications of CT in cardiac imaging include coronary artery calcium scoring for predicting the patient risk of developing major cardiac events, followed by coronary CT angiography which is commonly used to determine the diagnostic and prognostic accuracy in the coronary artery disease. This review presents an overview of the applications of CT in cardiac imaging in terms of coronary calcium scoring and coronary CT angiography. Judicious use of both cardiac CT tools will be discussed with regard to their value in different patient risk groups with the aim of identifying the appropriate criteria for choosing a cardiac CT modality. An effective diagnostic pathway is finally recommended to physicians for appropriate selection of cardiac CT in clinical practice

A Study on Project-Driven Practice and Innovation Abilities of IT Students’ Club

IT students’ clubs play an irreplaceable role in training students’ innovation and practical abilities. Through questionnaires and interviews, the paper analyzes students’ participation in IT clubs, the training of students’ innovation and practical abilities and the problems existing in the organization management of clubs. By referring to the successful experience of Wuhan University of Science and Technology in the practice teaching reform, a “project-driven” system for training practice and innovation abilities, which focused on training students’ innovation spirit and practical abilities, was established and achieved remarkable success
